The challenge
Municipal corporations are required to keep a census of the trees in their jurisdiction, and to assess trees before any pruning, transplanting or felling is approved.
Traditionally this happens on paper forms and spreadsheets. The data is hard to verify, has no exact location, and is out of date by the time it reaches the tree officer's desk.
The approach
I started in the field: surveyors work in direct sunlight, often with patchy network and hundreds of trees a day. The survey flow had to be fast, work offline and make wrong entries difficult.
On the office side, tree officers think in wards and species, so the dashboard is built around a map with ward boundaries and filters, not tables.
What I built
Field survey app
Record species, girth, height, canopy, health and ownership with GPS location and photos. It works offline and syncs when back in network.
Map dashboard
Every surveyed tree on a map, filterable by ward, species and health, with heritage trees and hazards flagged.
Assessment & reports
Tree assessments for permission requests, plus ward-wise census reports ready for the tree authority.
The results
Used by municipal corporations including Pimpri Chinchwad (PCMC) and Nagpur for their tree census and assessment work.
Tree officers see verified, geo-tagged data on a map instead of waiting for paper registers to be compiled.
